Instrumented Bolt – Axial & Bending

Transmission Dynamics have, on numerous occasions, converted critical load carrying bolts into instrumented bolts. Such bolts are strain gauged, allowing measurement of axial and/or bending moments, in order to determine: the static loads carried by the bolts, dynamic loads, and loss of preload.

The inset image is of an M20 bolt with 8 bending gauges and 1 axial gauge. The bending gauges were connected in a full bridge configuration, allowing measurement of the bending moment in the X and Y planes, at both the head and thread of the bolts.
