Our experience in instrumentation has allowed us to push the limits of what is possible. Transmission Dynamics have converted numerous gears into torque measurement load cells such as crank, idler and FIP gears – where space is very restricted.
In this particular example, each gear was strain gauged using four dual-grid chevron gauges which were connected to respond to torque, and calibrated to act as torque transducers. Strain gauge signals for each gear were amplified and extracted from the rotating components via slip rings mounted on a stub shaft protruding through a modified front engine cover. Data was acquired at a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz per channel.
